The inaugural class at Baylor College of Medicine’s (BCM) new Temple campus began classes on July 31, 2023.

BCM is one medical school with two campuses—one in Houston and the new one connected to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple—both following the same curriculum. Forty students make up the group of first-year students in Temple, making a total of 226 students in the BCM class of 2027. Eventually, there will be four classes of 40 medical students at the Temple campus.

Medical students will begin training in both real and simulated environments from Day One. After 15 months of didactic training, students will begin required clinical rotations at Baylor Scott & White and the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System facility in Temple.

“There is a need for more doctors in the community—the state has a significant shortage—and it is our responsibility to train medical students,” said Dr. Alex Arroliga, the lead clinical innovation officer for BSW and the regional dean of Baylor College of Medicine’s Temple campus. “Eighty-five to 90% of Baylor College of Medicine students are from Texas, and we hope to educate them and keep them in the state.”

As a system, Baylor Scott & White is affiliated with three medical schools: Texas A&M University in Dallas, Round Rock and College Station; Texas Christian University (TCU) in Fort Worth; and Baylor College of Medicine in Temple. In Central Texas, the system also collaborates with Temple College, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Baylor University to train nurses and other medical professionals.
