Breast Center Update

Breast cancer screenings are top-of-mind at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest and for our supporters in the Waco community.

Mr. McLane received the Founder’s Award in a ceremony on April 6, 2023.

Breast tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, is in high demand in the Breast Center at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Hillcrest in Waco. Building on traditional 2D mammography, breast tomosynthesis uses a series of two-dimensional  images to build a three-dimensional model of the breast.

While 3D mammograms are especially beneficial to those who have dense breast tissue or who are at high risk for breast cancer, many women who do not meet those guidelines request it anyway, says Michelle Wilson, RT (R) (M), manager for the Breast Center.

“Many of our patients are extremely educated on the benefits of 3D mammograms, so the demand is great, especially as Waco continues to grow,” Ms. Wilson says.

Currently, the team provides both 2D and 3D mammograms for 65 to 80 patients per day  and has extended its hours to meet patients’ needs.

“Our patients seen in the Breast Center also undergo a quick family history survey to see if they meet criteria for genetic screening and if they may be at high risk for developing breast cancer,” Ms. Wilson says. “This program is changing and saving ladies’ lives in just the quick 10 minutes it takes to get a mammogram. We are so proud that it has continued to grow and make a difference.”
