At McLane Children's, we understand that children are not mini-adults, and their healthcare requires specialized equipment, training, and support programs. From smaller tools to our Child Life program, everything at McLane Children's is designed specifically with children and families in mind.

Growing Stronger Together: Phase One Expansion

Phase One Expansion renderingBaylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center serves all children across the system’s 30,000 square-mile Central Texas footprint. But, just as children quickly outgrow their shoes, McLane Children’s has outgrown its current facility. With more than 30,000 annual emergency department visits, a two month waiting list for children needing physical and occupational therapy (PT/OT) and outdated imaging equipment, the Phase One Expansion will allow McLane Children’s to meet immediate needs dictated by volume, as well as position us for future inpatient growth.

Like good parents who plan for their child’s future growth, McLane Children’s is preparing to provide for children in Central Texas both now and in the future. The Phase One Expansion will impact three major service areas:

Fikes/CEFCO Emergency Department
  • Expanded waiting area for family and caregivers
  • 5 additional exam rooms, bringing the total to 19
  • 2 convertible "safe rooms" to better serve our mental health patients
  • Ability to treat 10,000 additional patients annually
Imaging Department
  • New 3T MRI to complement existing 1.5T MRI
  • 3T MRI provides better resolution, faster scans, and the ability to scan the entire body
  • Shell space to accommodate an additional MRI in the future
Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy Department
  • More than double the square footage of our clinic
  • Expanded gym area
  • Camera system to enable parents to watch therapy sessions
  • 3 additional private treatment rooms, bringing the total to 4
  • 3 additional full-time therapists to meet growing demand for services

Child Life

Child Life specialist and patientOur Child Life program helps children and families deal with the stress and anxiety that often accompany healthcare experiences. Through play activities, relaxation and stress management, and opportunities to socialize with other children, Child Life helps to normalize the hospital experience and provides emotional support for children and their families.

The Child Life program relies heavily on philanthropy. Many of our activities, supplies, and each of our summer camps are funded by your generous gifts to help children deal with medical treatment in a positive way.

Camp Dreamcatcher

Camp DreamcatcherChildren with cancer want to feel “normal.” That’s why McLane Children’s offers Camp Dreamcatcher. This special annual summer camp allows pediatric cancer patients, along with their brothers and sisters, to enjoy a normal summer camp experience while still receiving the necessary specialized medical care they need. Camp Dreamcatcher serves all pediatric Hematology/Oncology patients, between the ages of 6 and 15, who receive their treatment at McLane Children’s.

This camp helps restore the self-esteem and confidence that children often lose during the course of treatment for a cancer or blood disorder, provides an opportunity for patients and their siblings to meet other children in similar circumstances, and helps restore a sense of normalcy.

Teen Advisory Board

Teen Advisory BoardThe Teen Advisory Board is made up of McLane Children's patients who want to make a difference for other patients, from newborns to adolescents, by offering recommendations to hospital leadership based on their own personal experiences. The group also volunteers at hospital events, shares their experiences with visiting groups, and conducts their own fundraising campaign through the CMNH Extra Life program.

Extra Life

Extra Life is a 24-hour gaming marathon uniting thousands of players around the world in support of CMNH. The program uses the power of the gaming community to generate awareness and anyone can use the online platform to raise funds for the children treated every day at CMN Hospitals. In 2016, members of the Teen Advisory Board successfully raised enough funds to purchase a Blanketrol for Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center.
