Neuroscience Institute in Temple

From chronic conditions like headaches or memory challenges to emergencies like a stroke or traumatic brain injury, the Neuroscience Institute at BSW Medical Center – Temple offers the complete spectrum of diagnostics and treatment for patients with neurological disorders, injury or disease.

The need is greater than ever

Neurological disorders—those affecting the brain, spine and nerves—are a leading cause of illness and disability in the United States.

Changing demographics have increased the need for high quality neurological care in Central Texas as more families move to the area and a large portion of the population enters retirement age.

How you can help

Through your generosity, your loved ones and neighbors have access to advanced diagnostics and treatment for neurological conditions. Your gifts could support important needs, such as:

Advanced facilities

  • Additional biplane hybrid operating room
A surgical suite equipped with advanced imaging technology—including a biplane X-ray system which allows surgeons to view anatomical structures in real-time during surgery.
  • Neurology infusion therapy suite
A dedicated space for patients receiving infusions to manage the progression of neurological disease or treat the symptoms of chronic conditions.

Specialized equipment

  • LITT laser ablation equipment
Used during a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to destroy abnormal brain tissue, such as tumors.
  • Neurosurgical microscope
Allows surgeons to visualize small blood vessels and other complex anatomical structures on a live video feed with detail and clarity.
  • Robotic transcranial doppler (TCD)
Uses ultrasound waves to measure blood flow in the brain, as well as identify holes in the heart that can cause stroke. Though our current TCD machine requires a specialized technician to operate it, the robotic technology would help us care for more patients even when a technician is not readily available.

Advanced training

  • Additional neurology or neurosurgery residency
Multi-year programs that expose residents to a broad range of neurological conditions, with a focus on clinical care, research and education.
  • Vascular neurology fellowship
Allows physicians to gain experience and expertise in the full spectrum of stroke care with a high volume of complex cases.
