Neighbors helping neighbors
Donors and local residents are committed to making quality care convenient and easily accessible in Georgetown.
Three neighbors led the charge to help bring new and expanded services to the Baylor Scott & White Clinic - Georgetown, conveniently located near their homes in Sun City Texas™ in Georgetown.
Don Chasteen
Don Chasteen considers himself a product of the life-saving care he received at Baylor Scott & White. Battling a variety of health threats including heart disease and infection, Mr. Chasteen has always felt he had excellent care on his side.
“They have saved my life four times already,” Mr. Chasteen says. “I think the world of Baylor Scott & White, and that’s my reason for giving back to them.”
"I decided it was time for me to pay back for what I received... They were nice enough to stick my name on the wall, but the important part is helping the community."

Mr. Chasteen felt the expansion project at the Georgetown clinic would greatly benefit his neighbors, with the breadth and depth of expertise being easily accessible in his own community.
“That clinic is like a little hospital now, with so many specialties there,” he said. “I decided it was time for me to pay back for what I received. I thought it was a good thing to do. They were nice enough to stick my name on the wall, but the important part is helping the community.”
Thomas Burdett
Mr. Chasteen’s good friend and next-door neighbor is Thomas Burdett, who currently serves as board chair for the Baylor Scott & White Central Texas Foundation.
Mr. Burdett’s own history with Baylor Scott & White and his late wife’s passion for the Georgetown clinic also led him to support the expansion project.
Mr. Burdett and his wife of 53 years, Carlie, moved to the Sun City Texas™ area, in part to be closer to quality healthcare as Carlie battled kidney disease. Carlie volunteered frequently at the Georgetown clinic, starting a coffee service for patients.
“Baylor Scott & White has been a remarkable part of our life,” Mr. Burdett says. “Without it, I would have lost my wife before our three children had even finished high school.”
After Mr. Burdett gifted Carlie one of his own kidneys, the two enjoyed another 16 years of life together before Carlie passed away in 2019. Mr. Burdett and his family give to Baylor Scott & White in honor of Carlie’s passion for giving back to the healthcare system she believed had given her so much.
"I tell people that you’re going to have a legacy and I want mine to be charitable, that I’ve helped people who need help....I want to be remembered as having made every effort to be a Godly person with a big heart."

Mr. Burdett later married Donna B. Smiley, who also has a heart for giving back to Baylor Scott & White. The two advocate for their friends and neighbors to get their annual check-ups, knowing that access to regular care can make a vast difference in one’s overall health.
“The clinic and the doctors are very, very good,” Mr. Burdett says. “They’re very caring. This is a Christ-centered, not-for-profit organization. God’s a great healer, and the doctors and nurses at Baylor Scott & White have been blessed with incredible abilities.”
Mr. Burdett was recently honored as a Scott & White Clinic Fellow for his dedication to Baylor Scott & White over the years.
“I tell people that you’re going to have a legacy, and I want mine to be charitable— that I’ve helped people who need help,” he says. “It’s all about legacy. I want to be remembered as having made every effort to be a Godly person with a big heart.”
Steve & Gina Fought
Retired U.S. Air Force pilot Steve Fought, PhD, and his wife Gina have lived in the area since 2006 and love the feeling of having everything they need close to home, much like when they lived on base.
“As a pilot, I received the best healthcare in the military,” Dr. Fought said, “and the treatment at Baylor Scott & White is better than that!”
Dr. and Mrs. Fought are long-time donors and patients of Baylor Scott & White. They still look for every opportunity to contribute positively to their community through quality healthcare.
“This has been our only real home,” Dr. Fought said. “Since it is our home, we decided to continue to be involved. Being on campus here at Baylor Scott & White, I can’t imagine not contributing to it!”
Dr. Fought wants all his neighbors and community to have the same healthcare experience he has enjoyed at Baylor Scott & White.
“What I tell people is that this is our hospital and our clinic. This is where we go for care,” he said. “It is our community’s hospital, and I think we have an obligation to contribute to it and make it better. The more people who know about it, the more people will use it and get excellent care.”
