Child Life at McLane Children’s
Whether a child is fighting cancer, having surgery or being treated for an injury, the Child Life team is there to help them relax, understand what is happening and feel a little more normal.
What is Child Life?
The Child Life program helps pediatric patients and their families cope with the stress and anxiety that often accompany healthcare experiences.
Our team of certified Child Life specialists (CCLS) are trained in child development and supporting children and families in the clinical setting. They use strategies such as:
- Play activities, including medical play and therapeutic play
- Developmentally appropriate medical education
- Relaxation and stress management techniques
- Comfort and distraction techniques
- Opportunities to socialize with other children
- Grief and loss support

Benefits of Child Life services
- Reduces anxiety and stress for children, families and care providers
- Increases patient cooperation during procedures, reduces the need for sedation, decreases procedure times and limits the need for repeat procedures
- Helps children feel more in control and become active participants in their healthcare
- Helps children express their thoughts and feelings about a profound healthcare experience
How your gifts help
Since McLane Children’s Child Life services are offered at no cost to the patient, the program relies heavily on philanthropy. Many of our activities, supplies and each of our summer camps are funded by your generous gifts to help children deal with medical treatment in a positive way.
