Jim Ellison is a man whose life has been shaped by relationships and gratitude.
Born during the Great Depression and raised in a rural West Texas farm community, Jim watched neighbors show up for one another when times were hard. Those early lessons shaped a lifelong commitment to be of service to the people around him.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Jim built a successful greenhouse tomato business that eventually brought his young family to Brenham in 1969. It was there that his life became intertwined with Baylor Scott & White (then Scott & White), an organization whose commitment to service mirrored his own values.
Care that became a relationship
Jim’s relationship with Baylor Scott & White began out of necessity. It was the closest hospital when his family needed care.
Over time, those visits became more meaningful.
In 1976, Jim invited a respected oil industry leader to join his company’s board, a connection that introduced him to hospital leaders and shifted his view of the hospital from a place of treatment to a trusted community partner.
Baylor Scott & White soon became part of the Ellison family’s story across generations. Jim’s wife, Ellen, received care there. Later, his in‑laws moved closer to the family’s Belton lake house so medical care would be within reach. Through every season, caregivers walked alongside the family with compassion and professionalism.
Jim’s own health journey has also been closely tied to the organization. Multiple knee surgeries, hospital stays during COVID and a recent bout with RSV brought him back to the caregivers he trusted time and again. Now 94, Jim credited the dedication of Baylor Scott & White physicians and staff with helping him continue the things that matter to him—from traveling the world with friends to dancing with his granddaughter at her wedding.
Why giving back felt personal
As Jim’s relationships with caregivers deepened over the years, so did his commitment to giving back.
He served on advisory boards, attended galas and supported fundraising efforts because he saw how donations turned into expanded services, new clinics and improved access to care for rural communities like Brenham.
After his wife’s passing, charitable giving became an even more intentional part of the family’s legacy. Baylor Scott & White remained high on his list
“They continually try to improve and serve better,” Jim explained.
A legacy built on trust
Jim believes philanthropy is rooted in trust and connection. Serving on boards allowed him to see the inner workings of healthcare, introduce friends to the mission and witness how donor generosity transforms patient experiences.
Today, as a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he encourages others to invest where they see genuine commitment to community.
“When you build relationships,” Jim said, “you see the difference your giving makes, and you become part of something that serves others long after you’re gone.”
